MCI Releases Kisumu Millennium Development Goals Multi-Sector Household Survey
MCI’s latest research publication, “The Kisumu Millennium Development Goals Multi-Sector Household Survey,” was launched in Kisumu, Kenya, on October 16, as part of MCI’s Consultative Stakeholders Workshop. The study, which is the first application of MCI’s own comprehensive, poverty-related household survey instrument, assesses data gathered from over 600 households in three informal downtown settlements in Kenya’s third largest city, so as to better understand the particular challenges facing residents within these communities. In collaboration with local stakeholders, MCI then seeks to apply these data, to develop smart, integrated strategies that can jumpstart these residents’ exit from the urban poverty trap. Lack of access to fairly priced water, clean, lit streets that remain viable during the rainy season and skilled birth attendants during delivery are among the routine hardships faced by these residents, the survey shows.
It is the hope and expectation of MCI that the data analysis, conclusions and recommendations provided in this report will be used to guide local policymakers to devise targeted packages of interventions aimed at improving public health and access to clean water, sanitation, schools, safe streets and livelihood opportunities.
