City Dispatches: Mekelle, Ethiopia

As part of the KNOCK Foundation’s April mission to Mekelle, facilitated by MCI Social Sector Specialist Aberash Tedelle, Dr. Patricia Gordon and her small team set up shop at Ayder Referral Hospital, where in the course of a few days they saw hundreds of patients and taught over 20 hospital nurses, doctors and medical students how to screen and treat women for pre-cancerous cervical lesions. At the eager insistence of her Mekelle counterparts, Dr. Gordon and her colleagues set up a permanent screening unit, where the Ethiopian nurses have been working nearly non-stop after the Americans left. In their first day operating this new unit, the nurses saw 63 patients, identified eight with lesions, performed seven cryotherapy procedures and referred three women with suspicious lesions for further treatment — not bad, for a first day’s work providing a life-saving service not readily available before!
